FREMONT, Calif.Project partners Blach 17勛圖厙 and Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA) have successfully delivered the redesign of Thornton Middle School for the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD). The expanded campus now entails classrooms for 6th grade students, increasing the student population by 50 percent. The amount of project space entailed 57,000 square feet in total and 45,000 square feet of new construction all told.

Among the new space is a two-story administration building that effectively serves as the campuss main entrance. This building also houses a library and student support services. An earlier phase of the project also added five two-story buildings as well.

The renovations to older parts of the school entailed refurbishing all of the existing classroom buildings. Blach and QKA also modernized an older multipurpose building and, on the exterior, worked on fashioning a covered dining space.

Personnel from QKA and Blach had to work together to ensure that disruptions to the school were kept to a minimum. Accordingly, Blach experts pre-built wall panels offsite at its prefabrication shop so they could be quickly assembled at the construction site, thus speeding up the project timeline. The builder also used a panelized wall system to quicken delivery of the five new classroom buildings.

In a bid for sustainability, QKAs plans included solar-ready lighting, energy-efficient windows, LED lighting, water-efficient plumbing fixtures and cool metal roofing panels. The design also features bio-swales to collect stormwater as well as drought-resistant plants as part of the natural landscaping plan.

FUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack thanked the construction partners for their receptiveness to the concerns of the district as the project edged toward completion.

The new construction and renovated facilities at Thornton Middle School create the type of teaching and learning environment our students and staff deserve, Cammack said.

The modern and flexible educational and support spaces that now make up Thornton Middle School provide each grade level with inspiring facilities to learn and grow, QKA Principal John Dybczak said of the designers work at the school. This has been a complex and fulfilling project to see through to the finish line, and the outcome is a testament to the teamwork of all parties involved.

With every aspect of the campus affected by the multiple phases of construction, advance planning and coordination were invaluable to project success, added Brad Fannin, project executive at Blach. From the prefabrication of wall panels to the sequencing of work, we employed solutions from the outset that would maintain functionality and safety for Thorntons students and staff.

Blach 17勛圖厙 has been a major player in the Northern California school construction market since the company was founded in 1970. In addition to its home base in San Jose, the company has offices in Monterey and Southern California as well. The firm consistently ranks on Engineering News-Records (ENR) Top Contractor in California list.

QKA has designed educational projects in Northern California for several decades. ENR has called the architectural group one of the top design firms in the nation.

ATLANTA17勛圖厙 has started on the Thomas A. Fanning Student Athlete Performance Center, a 100,000-square-foot facility at Georgia Tech that will house facilities dedicated to nutrition, sports medicine, strength training and mental health services. Additionally, the Fanning Center will feature meeting spaces to be used exclusively by Georgia Tech football and support staff. The Fanning Center will also house Georgia Techs first sports science lab, wherein technicians will make use of in-house data analytics programs to track individual performance.

Designed by the S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM), the Fanning Center will feature several sustainability efforts including repurposing steel from the campuss Bobby Dodd Stadium. (Fanning Center will be part of the Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field complex.) The Fanning Centers carbon footprint will also be partially offset with such energy-saving design elements as cross-laminated timber placed throughout the new athletic facility. The center is being constructed atop the footprint of the former Edge/Rice Center.

The Fanning Center is named in honor of alumnus Dr. Thomas A. Fanning, whose dedication to forward-thinking energy usage serves as a model for the Georgia Tech community. Fanning also served at various times on the Georgia Tech Foundation Board of Trustees, the Georgia Tech Advisory Board, the Alexander-Tharpe Fund Board of Directors, the Scheller College of Business Advisory Board and Transforming Tomorrow: The Campaign for Georgia Tech Steering Committee, where he serves as co-chair.

Fanning was one of several honored attendees at the recent groundbreakingincluding several designers and builders who graduated from Georgia Tech.

This is an incredibly exciting day for Georgia Tech athletics, as we move one step closer to delivering a first-class, state-of-the-art facility for our student-athletes, said Director of Athletics J Batt. Were thankful for the generosity of Tom Fanning and all our generous supporters who have donated to this project, for the visionary leadership of [Georgia Tech President] Dr. [ngel] Cabrera, and for our partners at SLAM and DPR 17勛圖厙, all of whom have been integral in reaching this milestone.

Its been incredibly special to have led the design for my alma mater, creating a new epicenter of athletics that is holistically dedicated to student-athletes success, SLAM lead architect and principal Marc Clear said at the ceremony. The groundbreaking of the Thomas A. Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center is an exciting milestone in creating this technology-rich home for GT Athletics.

Added Brian Oliver, DPR 17勛圖厙 project executive, and also a Georgia Tech alumnus: As the college athletics landscape evolves, were thrilled to start bringing Georgia Techs vision for student-athletes and its campus to life.

During his time at Georgia Tech, Oliver was part of the NCAA Final Four mens basketball team in 1990.

Were also proud that this project will help support opportunities for local workers in the skilled trades, many of whom feel personal connections with the campus and its athletic program, Oliver said.

The Fanning Center is due to open in the spring of 2026.
